Tonto National Forest Centrally located in the state amidst the natural serene beauty where the desert meets the mountains, Cave Creek and Carefree make a unique foothills environment. The communities mirror a fine marriage of a ranching community that has a colorful history and a sophisticated planned residential town. The population is a lively demographic mix, spiced by a diversity of backgrounds, combined with large numbers of vacationers, which has generated a demand for first rate cultural and artistic activities, while the very nature of the land lends its self to a wide variety of outdoor activities. There is no shortage of activities for our outdoor minded residents.

Tonto National Forest, which encompasses nearly three million acres of rugged boulder and cactus covered mountains, borders the Foothills community to the north and the east and attracts many visitors. Nature lovers have many opportunities to enjoy coyotes, bears, mountain lions, antelope, mule deer, javelina, gila monsters, bald eagles, and big horn sheep in a setting of prehistoric sites of Native Americans, saguaros, pines, giant cottonwoods and geological phenomenon of enormous granite boulders, desert lowlands, spectacular canyons and mountains of layered strata.

Bartlett and Horseshoe lakes are popular spots for fishing, boating, jet skiers and swimmers with campgrounds that have tables, grills and toilets.

Seven Springs and Verde River attract river rafters, gold miners, hikers, and horseback riders and have campgrounds.

Needle Rock Recreation Area is approached from the Rio Verde River and is a scenic spot where the rocks rise from a willow-lined pool where the blue herons wade.

Cave Creek Regional Park is approximately 3,000 acres of historic and scenic peaks, valleys and intriguing trails along Cave Creek Wash. Transportation is foot and horse traffic only. Plans are in place for restoration of a mine shaft and to rebuild a homestead or Hohokam ruin to be used as an interpretation site.
